Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif is sick of rumours that she is marrying Salman Khan this month. In a chat with Vickey Lalwani, she emphatically rules out marriage in near future, talks about her forthcoming films, and more.

Your performance has been appreciated in Namastey London...
Yeah. I am very happy. I have been around for quite some time now and I have really worked very hard. I am reaping the fruits now, I guess. I wouldn't say that I expected this to happen. What worked in the film's favour is that Vipul just stuck to the story in a very linear fashion and did not complicate it.

Have filmmakers started taking you seriously now as an actress?
Yes, the perception of the people towards me has changed. It was very necessary for me to have a film like Namastey London. It has made my life a lot easier. My next aim is to take more steps like this in the forward direction.

Let's talk about Apne.

I signed Apne nearly two years back. Anil Sharma had to do a lot of spadework before he started the film. That's why it took some time. I have seen Sharma's earlier films and I always wanted to work with him.

Were you intimidated by the Deols?
Not really. Dharamji is a very warm person. He is like family. Bobby has become a friend. I play a physician in the family. I had lot of fun wearing the boxing gloves whenever the director called 'Cut' and Bobby and I used to have a fake fight (laughs). But with Sunny, it did take me some time to break the ice. He is one who generally keeps to himself.

How do you feel when you hear that Salman is recommending you to filmmakers?
I am working very hard. Nobody can do anything for you in this industry. I can understand if people said this in my early days, but I think now people should stop circulating false stories.

Its' also said that you call up for Salman's intervention if and when you have problems while you're shooting?
Bullshit. Fabrication of the highest order. Not that I take it seriously but people should stop talking nonsense. It's unfortunate that there are some people in this industry who just want to bring you down for no rhyme or reason.

What about your personal life? Everybody says that you are marrying Salman this month...
(Interrupts) I can't stop people from writing what they have decided to. Many actors are not accessible but I am. Why don't people call me up before writing things, which are not true? All this is nonsense. I am working. I am happy.

Few days back, 500 people gathered outside Salman's residence thinking that he was marrying you that day?
Sometimes, people get carried away in excitement.

Do you believe in the institution of marriage?

I think that everybody does.

Have you and Salman discussed marriage?
Let's talk something else.

Have you had a fall-out with Ram Gopal Varma? He dropped you from his version of Sholay and you not doing Sarkar2 either...
(Interrupts) No. In fact, Ramu is one of my very good friends and we have stayed in touch after Sarkar. We are beyond petty things. Sarkar2 was always meant to be with the Bachchans. As for his version of Sholay, I could not do it because of dates problem; He was actually supposed to start the film earlier but it got delayed due to many reasons.

What else is in your kitty besides Apne?

David Dhawan's Partner, Aneez Bazmee's Welcome, Saif Mustan's Race and Subhash Ghai's untitled next.

What are Bollywood stars planning for New Year?

Sonam Kapoor

As New Year's Eve rolls in, the Bollywood brigade is planning to whoop it up in different ways.

While Priyanka Chopra, Suniel Shetty and Sonam Kapoor plan to make it a family affair, Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora will entertain their fans with performances and others like Tusshar Kapoor are going to welcome the New Year with work.

Priyanka Chopra: I'm shooting till the Dec 30. Then I have one day to spend with my family. After the New Year, I am off to Bangkok to shoot a commercial for a beauty soap. My wish? That my father remains well and my films do well!

Suniel Shetty: I'm off to spend the year-end with my family in our Khandala home, and that includes my parents, of course. I'd want my family to be happy and complete in 2008. On the professional front, I want my production company Popcorn Entertainment to march ahead.

Bipasha Basu: I'm working on New Year's Eve. I'll be performing at the Marriott. Then I'm heading to Kenya for a week's holiday. I hope in 2008 I've loads of fun and I do great work. I'd like more travel for myself and less violence for the world.

Tusshar Kapoor: I can't travel out of Mumbai for the New Year because I'm shooting. So it'd be just close friends home on the Dec 31. My only wish for 2008 is to see my films get a smooth release.

Sonam Kapoor: I'm actually working this New Year in Jaipur. But my parents, sister and my best friend are coming to visit me.

Arshad Warsi: I'm off to the mountains in Uttaranchal with my family. I wish the world would take global warming seriously in 2008.

R. Madhavan: I'm off on a cruise with my wife and son in Singapore. My wish? I want to spend lots and lots of time with my family in Chennai in 2008. In 2007, I was home for all of 28 days.

Raveena Tandon: I'll be with my husband, my two children and friends at a friend's house in Alibaug. I want to get back to some work in 2008.

Esha Deol
: On the 31st I'm with my old school friends. In 2008, I want a role that will challenge me as an actress. Waiting with fingers crossed. I've kept my dates free. For the rest of world, I pray for peace.

Urmila Matondkar: I'll be working during New Year's Eve. As for my wish list for 2008, do you have the time?

Shabana Azmi: I've no plans for the New Year. I guess I'll go with the flow in the coming year.

Mona Singh
: This may sound boring, but I'll visit gurdwaras for the New Year's Eve to thank god for all he has given me. Then I'll spend the day with the family. I'll party at night with friends. In 2008, I hope I get that one big role in Bollywood.

Perizaad Zorabian: This New Year is special because it's my first as mummy to baby Zaha. Playing mummy, daddy and baby is like living in a fairytale. In 2008, I want to balance out my family life with my career.

Rahul Khanna
: I'm spending the New Year with friends in the US and looking forward to a year of interesting and fun-filled roles.

Arbaaz Khan: This year for the New Year's I'll be at our family farmhouse in Panvel with my parents and brothers. Earlier, during the year-end we'd head to Goa or Dubai. In 2008 I want to quit smoking. My son is growing up and I don't want him to feel it's okay to smoke because daddy's doing it.

Malaika Arora
: I'll be in Delhi performing for Country Club. In 2008 I want my new TV show and my feature film 'EMI' to do well

Koena Mitra
: I'll be dancing at the Sahara Star Hotel. Afterwards I'll party. I'm glad I'll be working and I'll bring in the New Year with work. In 2008, I want better work and more love from everyone. At the end of the day all we want is happiness.

Dino Morea
: I'm spending the New Year with my family and closed friends. My parents are down from Bangalore. In 2008, all I want is to work every day.

Celina Jaitley: My brother got engaged Dec 27. So we'll have a family dinner on New Year welcoming his fiancee to the family. That apart I want my career to finally take off in 2008. I've worked hard. I want my dues.

Amrita Rao: Since January 2007 I've been living out of suitcases. I've just returned from a month's schedule in Jaisalmer. So now I'm looking forward to spending time in Mumbai. My cousins have come down from America and we'll be partying together.

Irrfan Khan: My tall and long plan is to explore the interiors of Maharashtra. It's very important to be in touch with one's roots. Anyone who wants to accompany me is welcome to do so.

Rahul Bose: It's a sombre New Year for my sister and me. We lost our father recently. We're in our ancestral home in Kasauli going through his things, putting finishing touches to his life. But I don't grieve for my father. I celebrate his passing forth. Happy New Year!

Rakhi dropped from Ekta's awards function

Rakhi Sawant

After the brouhaha Rakhi Sawant created about the alleged rigging of results on STAR Plus' dance show Nach Baliye 3 and her questioning the 'role' of Ekta Kapoor and Balaji Telefilms in the final result, Balaji has decided to drop Rakhi from their first awards function on Jan 25 that is likely to be held at Dubai.

When asked, Ekta told IANS: 'I wouldn't really know the details of the show since they are being handled by Bunty Wallia and the Moranis. But yes, if my company has taken a policy decision, I am with them.'

'Rakhi was being offered a place in our first awards function. No, she wasn't going to dance but she was going to host one segment of the show. But after she has been making wild and totally unfounded allegations against Ekta, accusing her of favouring Aamir and Sanjida, Balaji has decided to drop Rakhi from their awards function,' said a Balaji source.

Ekta's awards function is likely to be held in Dubai. According to sources, Shah Rukh Khan has finally said yes to a performance at what promises to be one of the biggest live events.

Shah Rukh will be accompanied by none other than the Balaji breakaway bahu Smriti Irani.

'The idea is to set aside all rancour, to disprove stories about the ill-will generated by our actors who move out of Balaji. So it isn't just Smriti who's being invited to perform, we're also asking Iqbal Khan and Rajiv Khandelwal to join us on Jan 25,' said the source.

While the Moranis will be organising Shah Rukh's performance, the rest of the event will be handled by Bunty Walia's company.

THE BOLLYWOOD LEXICON... A BEGINNER'S GUIDE

As a viable, commercial avenue for the creative outlets of talented craftsmen, the Indian movie industry spells success, fame and fortune (in eye-popping zeros, if you please).

The Hindi filmdom, which overshadows its fellow regional movie productions like a BIG brother, has naturally become the preferred choice and destination for everyone who wants to touch the sky and reign among the stars in the shortest possible time (casting couch be damned).

Sadly, in this huge rush (for want of a better word) to grab a share of the pie-at-the-end-of-the-Bollywood Rainbow, the first casualities are discretion, sensibility and plain old commonsense, all of them wilfully sacrificed on the Altar of Fame.

So, it is with a bemused grin, chuckle or groan that you watch on television the cast interviews at the time of a movie launch, a soundtrack release or a movie preview. You stare in abject fascination at the similar 'language' being mouthed by all of those wannabe starlets and stars.

What makes it all the more enjoyable (I cringe here) is that all of them, more or less, sound the same.

So, here is a light-hearted attempt at compiling the 'keywords' that make up the basic language structure of apna Bollywood.

You may be familiar with some, and a stranger to most, but rest assured, it gets more enjoyable with each passing day.

1. A DIFFERENT MOVIE: The stress here is on the word 'different', as in, "It's different because compared to my other movies, I'm making an honest attempt to emote/act here, but it isn't working, as usual, and my director ain't buying it either!"

2. A LEARNING EXPERIENCE:
This is another expression fit for the Intensive care ward of the English language. When used in an interview, it normally means: "Frankly, I haven't the faintest idea of how to go about acting out the character and had to learn everything, right from how to tie my shoelaces properly to the fact that movie scripts are written in Hindi and not as SMS text."

3. A BRILLIANT DIRECTOR: The use of this expression is normally followed by a frantic rolling of the eyes, salivation and minor frothing at the mouth (in extreme cases). Seasoned interviewers can be seen bracing themselves after this keyword is used, normally keeping their index finger on the emergency-services speed-dial button on their cellphones buried in their jackets. Just in case.

The expression is used to indicate abject servility, as in, "You have no idea what it means to be working after vegetating for two years post my debut movie. I don't care if it may be a blink-and-you-miss-role, but it is a role, dammit, and I can afford to buy a pack of real cigarettes after they paid me the advance amount. That man is God. There is nothing I wouldn't do for the next production, believe me. I don't know what his last movie was, but as far as I'm concerned, he's brilliant, just for the fact that I get to work in his movie."

This is followed by more rolling of the eyes, and as the Interviewer pulls out his rosary frantically, the paramedics rush in.

4. FUN ON THE SETS: Usually heard amidst throaty giggling and elbowing between the cast present at the interview and more often than not may mean: "The things that we did in the make-up van would surely have made our Sunday School teacher flee his grave (God rest his soul). You just can't blame us alone, after all. Most often, the DVD player at the sets would refuse to work, which kept the scriptwriter from finishing his sequences based on that 'angrezi picher'. How long can one sit around in the sun with full make-up?"

And so on and so forth.

Your contributions towards enriching and nurturing the New Age Language of the Stars would be highly appreciated, my dear Constant Viewer.

After all, these efforts would contribute to the wholesome well-being of the Stars and, thereby, the Industry.

Can you imagine a week without a Friday opening?

This helps.

Believe me.

JAB WE MET... AND MADE IT A BOX OFFICE HIT

When a tight little movie, going by the zany name of Jab We Met, was released on October 26, many feared it would go down under the sound and fury of the Clash of the Titans - OSO and Saawariya. Maybe, it was based on the combined might of these two movies. Or maybe it was thought that the reigning superstars and super directors had the divine right to get full attention for their movies, whether the public liked them or not.

Six weeks down the line, the delightful Bhatinda Express is still whistling its foot-tapping tune and going, strong as ever, past Bhatinda into box office history.

Neither did it boast of "the timelessness of two star-crossed lovers' hearts whose passions almost consume their will to the brink of self-destruction" (phew!), nor did it depend on the over-the-top hamming of a superstar and him alone to carry the movie to the Box Office Scorcher's territory.

All it had was a genuinely engaging storyline weaved around two unlikely souls who meet on a train journey.

And that's all it takes to make a successful movie. Maybe Imtiaz Ali learnt his lessons from Socha Na Tha and decided to stick to the basics of a good movie this time around. Maybe he got lucky enough to cast the perfect combination that made his movie successful.

Jab We Met
is simply delightful.

From Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor), a disillusioned young industrialist who is trying to run away from all his troubles but refuses to part with his angst filled heart, to Geet Dhillon (Kareena Kapoor), a bubbly and effervescent Bhatinda chatterbox who sticks to him like glue while they are on their way to Bhatinda and keeps him engaged with her chatter, Jab We Met is a refreshing new take on the boy-meets-girl theme, and the sizzling chemistry lasts till the end of the movie.

Regardless of the protagonists' issues outside of the reel world, Shahid and Kareena form this irresistible yin-and-yang combination for every single "situation" that arises in their "incident"-prone journey and afterwards.
Shahid has matured as a prolific actor, when compared to his roles in his previous movies, and he portrays a degree of studied subtlety and repressed angst in his mannerisms and expressions.

And giving him the perfect verbal antidotes (incessant and how!) for all his problems is Kareena's character that she effortlessly slips into. She brings out rather brilliantly the exuberance that forms the driving characteristic of Geet Dhillon, who doesn't believe anything can go wrong with her life because all is well with the world as she knows it.

Jab We Met is a satisfying experience at the cinema, and you cant ignore the fact that Shahid Kapoor has arrived as an actor. It's now up to the industry to nurture his talent with projects that fit his emotive range.

It is also proof of the fundamental fact that it is very hard to stifle a good story.

Amongst all the din, it rises and stays to be noticed.

All it needs is encouragement based on common sense and individual choice and not on what the marketing whiz kids want you to believe in.

On its way to Box Office history and beyond, the Bhatinda Express might have chuckled at a burning wreck, all blue and crumpled, by the wayside, sputtering from the over-hype during its Diwali release and smarting from the licking it got by a small movie.

I call it the Revenge of Common Sense.

The Constant Movie fan can still separate the chaff from the grain.

No doubt about that.

Actor-producer-director Aamir Khan's next is Ghajini

Actor-producer and now a successful director, Aamir Khan is on a high these days. The reason is but obvious; his directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, which received a lot of critical acclaim, is on way to commercial success too. The slow start notwithstanding, the film is now faring extremely well, especially at the multiplexes.

The super actor may officially be on a long break, but that is far from the truth. As per our trade and distribution sources, Aamir Khan has a good mind to release his next film (still untitled), the Hindi remake of the South blockbuster, GHAJINI, during the next 'Eid-Ul-Fitr'. The festival incidentally is likely to fall on Gandhi Jayanti i.e. 2nd October 2008. The weekend after that too will be bountiful due to the festival of triumph of good over evil, 'Dussehra'.

Well knowing the film industry, we are quite sure that many other filmmakers will also try to cash in on the festive period and will follow suit!

Race Starcast is too huge - Bipasha plays negative role

5 years after JISM and 7 years after AJNABEE, Bipasha Basu would be seen playing a negative character for the third time in her career in RACE.

Directed by Abbas-Mustan, who were the men behind her introduction to the industry in AJNABEE, RACE is looking for a release in February 2008. A story about two brothers (Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna) who try to outdo each other, RACE deals with revenge and the games people play to win.

A TIPS production, the film boasts of a huge starcast and apart from Saif, Akshaye and Bipasha also stars Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy. Pritam has composed music for this action thriller that has Allan Amin as the action director.

Three stars fight for Box office battle - SRK , Salman , Emraan

Is there going to be a three way battle this March with three films boasting of reputed names clashing at the box office? If current release calendar is to be believed, this is on its way to happen.

Come 21st March and chances are that films starring Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Emraan Hashmi would be coming together at the screens. While Shahrukh Khan stars in DULHA MIL GAYA, Salman is one of the key protagonists in GOD TUSSI GREAT HO. Amitabh Bachchan is said to be playing the role of God in the film. On the other hand Emraan Hashmi is the lead actor in JANNAT.

Interesting part about DULHA MIL GAYA and GOD TUSSI GREAT HO is that both the films have been in the making for long with their release plan being always uncertain. Surprisingly JANNAT, shooting of which is currently underway, was originally slotted for an April release but has now has been pulled into March.

Hrithik follows SRK as an item boy

Hrithik Roshan, who is recuperating from a knee surgery, is all set to appear in the comedy Krazzy 4, his father's first production without him as a hero.

Hrithik, who has just returned from two weeks in Singapore, now leaves for Australia for further recuperation.

He will return to perform an intricate item number for Krazzy 4. To be directed by Raja Sen, the film is a comedy and stars Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Suresh Menon.

"Well, people always wondered how I could make a film without Hrithik. So here he is, all set to do his career's first item song," said Rakesh Roshan."My brother Rajesh Roshan has already recorded the song and I'm putting up an elaborate set for the song to be shot in March 2008. However, let me warn Hrithik's fans, if I feel his knee is not up to it, I won't shoot the song," added the concerned father.

In fact, senior Roshan too has decided to take a long sabbatical from direction. But hold on. He is producing a film that is to start in July 2008 and will feature Hrithik in a never-before avatar.

"It's an action thriller with a strong love story at its heart. Anurag Basu, whom both me and Hrithik think very highly of, is directing the film for us," revealed Rakesh.

It's been a time of turmoil for Hrithik. A troublesome knee injury finally decided to act up seriously.

"The doctors told him he needed to rest the knee completely, and I mean completely; otherwise it would give way. The injury got aggravated from all the stunts in his recent films, including Krrish.

"It got to a point where his knee gave way completely. The doctors said he had to take complete rest for two months or face the consequences," said Rakesh explaining the problem.

The year 2007 has been a quiet year for Rakesh as a director.

"And so it will remain in 2008. I'm not directing any film. As I said Anurag Basu will direct my son in our next production. I've spent 40 years in the movie business and enjoyed every second of it, but now I need to devote time to my family, and to myself.

"I want to watch my grandson grow up. My hands are as full with production work as I want it to be."

He promises Krazzy 4 will be unlike the avalanche of comedies that have hit us in recent times.

shahid kapur the next romantic hero

After two hits, Shahid Kapur has consolidated his position as Bollywood’s next romantic hero.

The good run of Vivah last year followed by the box-office success of Jab We Met this year has turned Shahid’s career around. Suddenly, the actor has found a place in the wish-lists of leading production houses.

Among them is Yashraj Films that are presently in talks with Shahid for a romantic movie.
